U.S.-China Institute at Bryant University

Established in October 2006, the Confucius Institute at Bryant University (CIBU) was the first China-funded institute in Southern New England dedicated to the promotion of Chinese language and culture. This joint project between Bryant University and the Office of Chinese Language Council International (Hanban) offers resources to benefit students, educators, individuals, and businesses in Rhode Island and the local region. Named after the revered Chinese thinker, educator, and philosopher, the Confucius Institute is managed by the U.S.-China Institute at Bryant University in collaboration with the China University of Geosciences at Wuhan.


  • K-12 Chinese Programs : working with local K-12 schools to introduce Chinese language and culture through the After School Enrichment Program and Chinese in Lunch Time Program. Various language classes have also been developed for K-12 students.

  • Community Language Classes : designed for the general public with different goals, including Young Learner Chinese, Chinese for Adults and Private Tutoring .

  • Chinese Proficiency Test Services: Bryant University is the first institution in New England authorized by China's Ministry of Education to offer standardized Chinese language tests, including Chinese Proficiency Tests (HSK), the Business Chinese Test (BCT), and the Young Learners Chinese Test (YCT).

  • STARTALK Summer Chinese Camp: funded by federal agencies under the "National Security Language Initiative" launched by President Bush, the STARTALK program encourages American students and teachers to learn strategically important languages that are not readily available, such as Chinese and Arabic. Bryant has offered the summer camp in 2007 and 2008.

  • China Study Trip: providing American teachers and students the opportunity to explore the rich history, culture, and dynamic economy of China, CIBU organizes study trips to historical and cultural landmarks and tours of natural landscapes, as well as opportunities to interact with the local community.

  • Cultural Celebration: to introduce and increase the awareness of Chinese tradition, CIBU holds traditional holiday celebrations, including the Mid-Autumn Festival in September and Chinese New Year in early spring.

  • Golden Jasmine Chinese Film Festival: a collaboration with the Rhode Island International Film Festival, the Golden Jasmine Chinese Film Festival introduces American audiences to the social and cultural landscapes of China through Chinese films.

  • Confucius Institute Library: housing thousands of volumes of books (including audio/video materials) about Chinese history and culture, politics and economy, and ancient and contemporary literature, as well as textbooks and reference books in Chinese and English.


The Director of the Confucius Institute is Bryant University Professor Hong Yang, Ph.D. He is a noted expert in environmental science and a public intellectual scholar selected by the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations.
